20 years ago, Dr Hauschka realised that they could not source an organic shea butter and so they set off on a mission to create one. They worked with a company in Burkina Faso in West Africa and this was the start of a long term partnership in certified organic shea butter. The project was certified fair trade in 2019. Dr Hauschka pay a correspondingly higher price for this quality, which benefits many small farming families in 21 local villages. This extra money is invested in public health education and drinking water treatment, as well as in village development initiatives. The money also allows for education in the communities and has provide opportunities for university and further education for the families of the women working on the project. Today, some 4,000 women collect shea nuts for for the project using strictly controlled wild harvesting methods. The nuts are shelled onsite by the women, dried, and placed in temporary storage in warehouses that are co-financed by Dr Hauschka.
To celebrate 20 years of the project, four of the Dr Hauschka shea butter products are available in limited packaging, inspired by traditional art works from Burkina Faso.
